PHOs work to ensure that health services are available and near to the people in their communities
PHOs are built on the principle of health providers and communities working together to meet the health needs of people in their areas.
Co-operation, collaboration and teamwork are the key to their success.
Cooperation between:
v Providers of services
v PHO Boards
v Managers & worker
v Families and communities
Health service providers work together under the umbrella of a PHO.
These services include family doctors (GPs), nurses, community health workers, public health educators, physiotherapists, counselors, social services and rongoa practitioners.
Participating
A Board made up of service providers and community representatives runs PHOs. They ensure the services provided within a PHO are what is wanted by the people in your community.
You can have your say by attending meetings or asking the health professional you are closest to, about what they are doing and how you can be involved.
You may also like to invite health professionals from a PHO to meet a group you belong to, or have gathered, for the purpose.
Joining
If you already have a family doctor you visit regularly, you will automatically be enrolled to the PHO your doctor has joined. If you do not have a family doctor you can contact a PHO to help you find a doctor.
